What to Expect During a Bowen Treatment

This short video demonstrates a selection of Bowen moves that may be used during a treatment.

Additional Information is Provided Below

The Technique

Does not include any prolonged pressure or hard manipulation and the majority of my clients find it relaxing and pleasant to receive. The pressure used is generally light but can be adapted to suit the individual and most of the moves can be made through light clothing with the client lying, sitting or standing - making it an ideal therapy for everyone from babies & children to athletes, the elderly or disabled.

The Bowen Move

Is a rolling-type move made by the fingers or thumbs over the skin in specific locations and is designed to disturb the underlying muscle, fascia, ligaments, tendons, joints and organs, in order to bring about a healing response in the body.

The Breaks

These are unique to this form of soft tissue therapy and are an important aspect of the treatment. They vary in duration depending on each client’s condition or tissue tension and allow the body to respond and integrate what is being done.  This response may sometimes be immediate or can take up to 10 days, which is why we suggest that you do not receive any other therapies in between Bowen treatments .*

* There are exceptions, which can be discussed

How Long Will a Bowen Treatment Last?

An initial treatment will usually last between 60-75 mins as this will include a thorough consultation and where appropriate, some testing eg. Range of movement of affected areas.

Follow-up treatments will usually last between 40-60 minutes.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

There are many variables that affect our health and wellbeing and every body and experience of Bowen is unique.  It is recommended that you plan to book an initial 3 treatments, ideally between 5-10 days after your previous treatment.  Change is often observed within these three sessions although some conditions may benefit from ongoing treatment.

If no change has been observed after the third appointment, an alternative approach maybe discussed.
